SHPE Jr.

As part of USC-SHPEs effort to make a difference in the community, a Junior SHPE Chapter was established at Foshay Learning Center during the 2003-2004 school year.

USC-SHPE began recruitment for Junior SHPE within MESA but quickly expanded to include the entire 6th through 12th grade student population at Foshay. The students were very enthusiastic about the prospect of a satellite SHPE Chapter that they could continue their involvement with when they reached the college level.

On April 23rd, 2004 USC-SHPE provided leadership training for the first Junior SHPE Officers at Foshay Learning Center. During this training the new officers learned about SHPE at the national, regional, and USC level as well as valuable lessons on the importance of organization and motivation in leadership.

USC-SHPE has organized a number of events for the Junior SHPE Chapter, including STARS (Students Taking Active Roles in the Sciences), STEP (Success Through Early Preparation) and Discover Engineering Day.

Junior SHPE remains strong at Foshay. Their Major of the Month meetings allow Junior SHPE members to learn about various engineering majors from a panel of USC students who have experienced them first hand. In addition, Junior SHPE has targeted the interest of middle school students to make sure that the organization continues its success even after its founding members graduate.

STEP

STEP was developed with the idea that early preparation is essential for the success of college bound students. The program is geared to junior and senior college bound high school students. These students learn about higher education from a three workshop series. The purpose of the workshops is to facilitate the college entrance process for students.

STEP consists of a three workshop series and a campus tour. The program begins at 9:00 a.m. and finishes at 2:00 p.m. The three workshops include college admission, financial aid, and student life. The admission workshop was administered by an admissions counselor from USC. This workshop provided students with accurate and up to date information about college admittance requirements. The workshop also gave students an outline of important deadlines for applications.

The financial aid workshop helped students prepare to get a better education at a lower cost. This workshop was led by a USC financial aid advisor who gave information on scholarships, loans, and grants. The workshop also let the students know of important deadlines for financial documents.

The student life workshop was administered by a panel of SHPE members.

Each described the different aspects of student life and the time management skills required to be an engineer. The panel then responded to student questions.

Day at the Museum

Day at the Museum

Day at the Museum has long been a tradition for SHPE-USC. Although many events come and go, Day at the Museum has repeatedly proven to be a success. The purpose of this event is to help kids learn more about science in an interactive, hands on manner and to provide mentoring opportunities for SHPE members.

50 students from a local elementary school are invited to a fun filled day. The students are supervised by their teachers and volunteer SHPE members. The day begins with a visit to the Los Angeles Science Center, where students are given the opportunity to explore science through various hands-on activities. Afterwards, the children enjoy lunch at the local McDonalds. The day ends after viewing an educational IMAX movie.

How to Volunteer: This year's Discover Engineering Day is April 18th. SHPE-USC needs volunteers from 8:00AM - 3:00PM, if you have any time at all, come by for this great volunteering opportunity! Please email shpe.usc.edu with your name, phone number, and hours your available!

Discover Engineering Day

Discover Engineering

Discover Engineering Day brings high school students to the engineering side of the USC campus to engage in activities to broaden their perspective on the fields in engineering.  Each student gets the chance to participate in hands-on activities related to every field in engineering with college students as their mentors throughout the day.  The students also get to explore the many laboratories on campus to see engineering in action.

This year we will also bring SHPE Alumni to share their stories of success with the students.
